Internship | Field Interviewer: Research in Syringe Exchange Programs

Position: Field Interviewer | Credit-bearing Internship and Volunteer opportunities available

Timeline: Weeks of January 6th, 13th and 20th

Minimum commitment: 3 weeks, 21 hours per week

Mandatory training sessions: Tuesday January 7th and Wednesday 8th (full day)

Overview:

Intensive three week research opportunity administering IRB approved survey tool to program participants of Syringe Exchange Programs in the five boroughs of New York City. Activities may be conducted on-site at program office locations or ‘in the field’ during street or mobile-based outreach activities.

This position is designed for students interested in the fields of research, public health, sociology, psychology, drug user health and/or social justice. Interns will be required to undergo Institutional Review Board (IRB) training and pass a web-based exam prior to taking part in a mandatory two-day training to be held January 7th and 8th.

General responsibilities will include:

  • Engage individuals participating at NYC Syringe Exchange Programs on study
  • Request participation in study
  • Provide informed consent and answer questions related to confidentiality
  • Conduct survey,  answer questions from study participants as they arise based on training received
  • Other tasks may include data entry and other duties as assigned.

We are seeking interns with experience and interest in the above fields who are outgoing, street-smart and can perform high-quality research with a variety of populations under adverse conditions. Individuals who are bilingual (Spanish/English) are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Injection Drug Users Health Alliance is a coalition of Syringe Exchange Providers serving the five boroughs of New York City. IDUHA works to promote and implement strategies that prevent the spread of diseases such as HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis C, reduce overdose deaths, support healthy behaviors, address addiction, and facilitate clients’ access and retention into medical care, mental health care and drug treatment.
