Health Educator at Dominican Women’s Development Center

Job Description

  • Identify locations and settings where there may be high risk activity for HIV, STD, and/or Hep C transmission such as after hour clubs, LGBTQ venues, sex worker strolls, and other settings to provide outreach, specifically safer sex education and condom distribution; conduct outreach during late evening and weekend hours with support of peers
  • Arrange and conduct street outreach activities in Washington Heights/Inwood in order to reach MSM, sex workers, and other individuals at high risk for HIV, STD, and/or Hep C with the support of peers
  • Provide participant recruitment, risk reduction counseling, coordination into care, and street based or non traditional venue supportive services: includes assessing individual risks for HIV/STD and/or Hep C, performing client intakes, and conducting individual level interventions (HIV/STD Risk Reduction Counseling & Referrals) and group level interventions as specified in the workplan
  • Provide audit worthy documentation of sites visited, program promotion, encounters, and relay feedback to Program Coordinator on a weekly basis
  • Assist Program Director in program monitoring and evaluation
  • Participate in biweekly staff meetings to discuss outreach and engagement strategy with Health Promotion Program Staff
  • Performs data collection and reporting (i.e. outreach activities, client intakes, interventions delivered to individuals and community health education activities) as per AIDS Institute guidelines

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Position requires knowledge of client engagement & outreach strategies; skilled in HIV prevention techniques and the ability to carry out outreach/risk reduction counseling and strong group facilitation skills with persons at high risk for HIV/STD, and/or HEP C acquisition or transmission
  • Experience working with sex workers, drug users, formerly incarcerated, MSM, LGBTQ and HIV+ populations, additional preferable work experience includes training and motivating volunteers, LGBTQ issues and community organizing
  • Must be fluent in both English and Spanish
  • Must be outgoing, organized, self motivated and committed to working in a diverse environment
  • Must be a team player and able to work effectively with a large variety of personalities and abilities, pragmatic with excellent problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in varied weather conditions; weekend and evening hours flexible to reach target populations
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Working knowledge of Macintosh, Microsoft Office; AIRS and Adobe Indeisgn, Illustrator a plus but not required
  • Strong commitment to the mission and vision of DWDC is a must.
