Hepatitis B in NYC: 2022 Annual Report Surveillance Overview

  • Despite the decline, more than 86,000 people in NYC are estimated to live with chronic Hep C.
    • 5,534 New Yorkers newly reported with chronic Hep B
    • Almost 58% of all newly reported people with chronic hep B were male and almost half (49.1%) of all newly reported were 30 to 49 year olds
    • There are 651 pregnant New Yorkers living with Hep B in NYC in 2022 and 99.5% were born outside the U.S

Hep B Outreach and Screening in the South Asian Community

  • In collaboration with Korean Community Centers (KCS)and with the Hep B mini-grant awarded, United Sikhs conducted 11 screening events at 6+ Gurdwara Community Centers
  • 199 people were tested for Hep B
    • 7 people who tested positive for Hep B were connected to care with KCS
    • 132 people were referred to NYC Sexual Clinics for the Hep B vaccination
  • The screening events are identifying people with chronic Hep B, and people who are not protected against Hep B
  • Community members are initiating contact with organizers to ask about future screening events, implying that awareness is spreading
