Director of Health & Support Services

Oversee programs provided by office-based staff, consultants, and interns to provide quality services to promote the health and wellness of people who use drugs.

  • Provide leadership and vision for linkages and collaborations with other organizations.
  • Serve as the day-to-day supervisor of the office programs, including the drop-in center, care coordination, health and wellness services, and overall physical space including the area directly outside of the office; lead efforts to modify the office procedures or physical space to promote staff productivity, staff and participant safety, confidentiality, and overall wellness.
  • Lead initiatives related to healthcare reform activities, including the implementation of new electronic health records and care coordination systems, interdisciplinary training, monitoring and evaluation of internal and external referrals. Oversee the implementation of expanded medical and behavioral health services onsite. Expand and maintain relationships with external community-based organizations and healthcare institutions to improve coordination of services for people who use drugs.
  • Provide consistent harm reduction informed supervision of staff, interns, peers and consultants providing services onsite, including but not limited to, the drop-in center, case management, health and medical, counseling, educational and support groups, data entry, and administrative activities. Provide annual performance evaluations for all direct reports.
    • Oversee timely renewal of scope of service documents for consultants.Oversee intake and referral services, documentation of services, upkeep of referral contacts, scheduling of in-person advocacy and escorts for participants, client-provider boundaries, and focus on both short and long-term planning for agency participants.
    • Review case coordination services to ensure staff are providing individuals with short and long-term case management and supportive counseling using low-threshold, nonjudgmental, and culturally-relevant methodologies; modify both documentation tools and reporting systems to ensure audit-worthy records of service provision.
    • Oversee health and medical services including, but not limited to, CUHRON CORNER Clinic, consultant wellness services, onsite hepatitis C testing and treatment, partner organization-run HIV testing, electronic health record maintenance, and medication and medical supply inventory.
    • Coordinate educational and support groups onsite, including the scheduling of groups and identifying facilitator training needs. Oversee ongoing evaluations of educational and support groups to gauge interest in and value of groups to allocate resources effectively.
    • Utilize both quantitative and qualitative feedback from internal needs assessments and the Participant Advisory Board to propose changes to office operations related to schedule or personnel to meet the needs of the community of people who use drugs. Oversee office scheduling to ensure adequate staff support for program operations and make adjustments accordingly.
    • Represent the organization at meetings and working groups, including but not limited to those related to healthcare reform, care coordination, mental health services, clinical integration opportunities, and advocacy related to services for people who use drugs.
    • Oversee all partnerships, short- and long-term, related to research or survey activities onsite. Maintain all documents related to the activities, communicate with staff members to ensure understanding of the purpose of the studies, and obtain approval from the Executive Director and Participant Advisory Board.
    • Oversee all quality assurance activities related to case management documentation, drop-in center service documentation, internal needs assessments, health and wellness services. Coordinate with Director of Outreach & Prevention Services
    • Serve as the field supervisor of up to two concurrent (2) Masters of Social Work (MSW) interns from various institutions, including but not limited to participation in field supervisor meetings, documented supervision, and timely evaluations.
    • Visit community based organizations (CBOs) and attend appropriate local meetings to represent and present on program activities and/or to seek out current information about disease prevention, treatment and care; special attention to healthcare access including insurance enrollment and services for HIV and Hepatitis C positive individuals.
    • Perform administrative duties related to payment requests, supply inventory, and internal program materials.
    • Attend Board of Trustees meetings and external meetings in place of the Executive Director upon request.
    • Reports to the Executive Director.
  • Work in coordination with the Director of Outreach & Prevention Services to maintain and revise marketing and promotional materials to be used both internally and externally to promote WHCP services and events.
  • Provide monthly narrative and data reports to the Executive Director for government contracts. Provide narrative and data reports to Executive Director upon request for private grants related to onsite activities on an ongoing basis.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Outreach & Prevention Services to plan and facilitate weekly staff meetings and monthly staff development day.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Director of Finance to monitor spending on existing contracts, reporting on renewals of contracts, and budgeting for proposals on an ongoing basis.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Director of Finance in the development of the annual organizational operating budget.
  • Provide support to the Executive Director and the development team for the preparation, execution, and follow up for fundraising events.

Experience/ Additional Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Social Work (LCSW, LMSW); Seminar for Field Instruction (SIFI) preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years management experience; managing staff in a harm reduction setting a plus
  • Commitment and understanding of the harm reduction philosophy in both service provision and management; familiarity with social service agencies and health care service provision
  • Direct experience working with street-based populations, such as injection drug users, active drug users and sex workers preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to motivate staff, provide constructive and supportive feedback, and adapt approach to match various learning styles and abilities
  • Should be organized, self-motivated, creative, and committed to working in a diverse environment
  • Must be a team player and able to work effectively with a large variety of personalities and abilities
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Committed to working with people who use drugs
    Pragmatic and competent problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work with diverse communities (gender, ethnic, age, language, political, drug use, history of incarceration)
  • Ability to master a wide range of information and communicate accordingly
  • Excellent communication skills (writing and oral); timely follow up on tasks for staff and supervisor
  • Great attitude and people skills are a must
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred
