US & Global Health Policy Director

Treatment Action Group (TAG) is an independent AIDS research and policy think tank fighting for better treatment, a vaccine, and a cure for HIV/AIDS and life-threatening co-infections including tuberculosis and viral hepatitis. TAG is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1992 and based in New York City.
This Position will be based in Washington, D.C**
In Spring 2009, TAG expanded its presence and hired staff based in Washington DC to strengthen the US & Global Health Policy Project. This project leads TAG’s efforts to ensure responsible US policies and adequate US government funding for research and development for AIDS, TB and viral hepatitis and for effective domestic and global AIDS, TB and viral hepatitis programs. As part of this project, TAG works with global health advocates and activists in other donor and developing countries to promote and advance a common agenda of universal access to quality and equitable health care services.
Primary Responsibilities
The essential duties of this position include
- Support the implementation of TAG’s U.S. executive branch and legislative strategies;
- Participate in a range of domestic and global advocacy coalitions to help shape advocacy strategy and support implementation of coalition activities that align with TAG’s priorities. This may include presentations, regular participation in e-listservs and conference calls, and attending meeting and conferences;
- Conduct in-person meetings with members of Congress, congressional staff and the executive branch, as well as relevant officials at CDC, FDA, NIH, OGAC, USAID, etc. Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and staff, coordinate congressional briefings and give testimony before congressional committees;
- Research and prepare policy analysis, recommendations, briefs and other written materials used for educating policymakers and recruiting broad support across coalitions/networks for TAG’s policy advocacy priorities;
- Assist with TAG’s communication and social media efforts, including action alerts, grassroots mobilization efforts and generating content for TAG’s website, Facebook and twitter presence;
- Support TAG’s advocacy efforts and global health policy priorities on a range of federal, bilateral and multilateral initiatives;
- Provide flexible administrative and logistical support as needed for travel and event planning;
- Work on cross-programmatic initiatives within TAG that impact US policy and legislation;
- Travel is estimated to be up to 30%.
Qualifications
Significant experience in:
- Developing and implementing successful advocacy campaigns, coalition building and grassroots advocacy
- US legislative affairs and/or policy development
- Domestic and global health policy issues practically related to HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Hepatitis C advocacy
- Demonstrated experience in networking and coalition building;
- Experience working with domestic and international stakeholders;
- Basic knowledge of bilateral and multilateral development agencies and institutions including USAID, PEPFAR, GFATM, the World Health Organization, etc.; expertise in at least two areas preferred;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to relate complex policy and health issues to varying audiences including legislators, community activists and media;
- Strong analytic, writing, research skills
- Strong organization skills with the ability to prioritize activities based on needs for the program and changing political landscape;
- Experience in event planning including working with and managing meeting planners/logistics providers, coordinating travel, venues and lodging;
- Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a fast-paced environment;
- Ability to work independently and proactively to get tasks completed;
- Demonstrated commitment to global health and universal access to health care;
- Proficient in computer skills: Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint, web-based research and web-based communications/advocacy fora;
