Highlights

More than 329,000 people in NYC are estimated to live with chronic hepatitis B and/or C and over a third are still unaware of their infection. Increasing services to screen, treat and prevent hepatitis B and C is necessary to reach elimination goals.

Monitoring Hepatitis Trends and Data

  • 5,534 newly reported cases of chronic Hep B, an increase from 2021

  • 2,805 newly reported cases of chronic Hep C, a decline from 2021

  • Conducted case investigations of 62.3% of newly reported cases of Hep C in people ages 18 to 34 years

  • Provided case management services to 651 New Yorkers with Hep B and their infants to help prevent perinatal transmission

Expanding Hepatitis Care and Treatment Capacity

  • Trained more than 1,195  clinical providers to screen and treat Hep B and C

  • Expanded Hep B and C navigation services to train and employ over 203 peer and patient navigators in contracted programs, reaching 3,029 at risk for or living with Hep B and C New Yorkers

  • Called 989 New Yorkers living with Hep B or C to provide navigation services, and support linkage to care and treatment

  • Partnered with an outpatient primary care clinic to offer Hep C treatment via telemedicine to two inpatient substance use treatment programs experienced in treating opioid addiction

Health Inequities in Viral Hepatitis

Not all New Yorkers have equitable access to viral hepatitis prevention and medical care. Specific groups face challenges accessing care due to structural racism, stigma or discrimination, including people who: are born outside of the US, have low income, use drugs, and have a history of homelessness or have criminal justice involvement.
