Community Organizer (HIV, Hepatitis, STI)
Position Description:
Working under the supervision of the Director of New Business Development and Outreach Services, The Community Organizer is directly responsible for developing collaborations with residents, community business, Tenants Associations, executive board members, policy-makers, various local social services agencies, local health service providers, and local Community Boards. These collaborations are critical to provide HIV/AIDS/STI awareness through educational events, workshops and health fairs, for the communities in Upper Manhattan and The South Bronx. S/he will work closely with Harlem United’s testing teams to saturate defined areas of East and Central Harlem with HIV stigma-reduction messages and coordinate neighborhood HIV/HCV/STD testing events and access to care and services. The Community Organizer (CO) must have extensive knowledge of Harlem andNew York City’s health and human services network and must conduct assessments and refer individuals and/or families to appropriate community resources for needed services. The CO will establish ongoing relationships to ensure successful connection to Harlem United’s medical, dental and social services.

Essential Job Functions:
The following duties are mandatory requirements of the Community Organizer position:
- Participate in monthly partnership meetings with various social services organizations to help identify community needs, schedule health fairs, and develop educational curricula and marketing materials.
- Identify and build relationships with other community partners to serve as referral sources to meet the social and economic empowerment needs of Upper Manhattan and South Bronx residents.
- Facilitate VOICES/VOCES, (Video Opportunities for Innovative Condom Education and Safer Sex), a single-session, video-based program for the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In addition, identify venues (Internal and external) where this intervention will be facilitated and crate a monthly schedule. The candidate will be responsible for accurately completing and entering all VOICES VOCES related documentation in the AIRS database.
- Develop trainings to build the outreach and communication skills of local volunteers and peer workers to promote stigma reduction messages and increase the amount of referrals for testing rate for Harlem residents. Trainings include but not limited to scene role plays, survey understanding, training and Outreach forms training, cultural competency, and engagement skills
- Be the lead planner of several annual community events (large and small-scale events) Overall purpose of these events is to make Upper Manhattan and South Bronx residents aware of the importance of testing, help reduce the stigma of HIV/AIDS, discuss and try to eliminate many misconceptions of HIV/AIDS, and provide free rapid HIV/STI/Hep C testing;
- Transport consumers, as needed, to Harlem United Medical and Dental clinics, as needed.
- Conduct Health Education Workshops (HCPI’s) in the community centers, school based organizations and CBO’s, including delivering evidence based interventions conducted under the Education and Training Team.
- Required to work some evenings and some weekends as needed by the program needs.
Other Responsibilities:
The following duties are to be performed as assigned by the supervisor:
- Participate fully in all program evaluation activities.
- Participate in agency-wide events as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education:
- The Prevention Department seeks an individual with at least a Bachelor’s Degree, and/or
- Over 3 years of experience in community organizing, with a focus on planning health-related events.
Special Skills and Knowledge:
- The hired CO should be extremely familiar with Upper Manhattan and South Bronx communities.
- CO should have a background in coalition work and experience in case management.
- The ability to speak fluent Spanish is a major plus.
- Posses a NYS drivers license is a Must.
- Must be able to work with a vast variety of populations, and cannot discriminate anyone based on sexual orientation or religious preference. Knowledge and familiarity with HIV/AIDS services, including prevention strategies, and harm reduction, is a plus.
