2024 Hepatitis Awareness Month Recap

Commemorating National Adult Hep B Vaccination Awareness Day (April 30), Hepatitis Awareness Month (May), National Hispanic Hepatitis Awareness Day ( May 15), National Hep C/HIV Co-infection Day (May 17) and National Testing Day (May 19)

To mark National Hepatitis Awareness Month in May, Hispanic Federation, the NYC Health Dept and Hep Free NYC teamed up for the 12th #HepFreeNYC X (Twitter) Chat, hosted a Press Conference at the Steps of City Hall and organized a Hep B & C Outreach event to shine a light on the importance of testing, managing and linkage to care for Hep B and C.

To kickoff the month, on May 8th, 15 Hep Free NYC champions joined the #HepFreeNYC X(Twitter) Chat to engage elected officials, state and national partners, and hepatitis providers and public health professionals on the fight to eliminate Hep B and C. NYC champions also highlighted their efforts to providing care.

On May 16th, 4 city council members, Eric Bottcher, Lynn Schulman, Chris Banks and Chi Osse and over 120 Hepatitis Champions attended the Steps of City Hall to raise awareness for increased testing, access to care, and treatment of Hep B and C! Hep Free NYC organizations gathered to call to end viral hepatitis in NYC! Shout out to all viral hepatitis speakers advocating and sharing stories in linking patients to care. Thank you Zaida Aguilar for sharing your Hep C cure journey!

To end the month, NYC partners organize the South Bronx Outreach and Screening event, where 15 organizations attended and reached over 125 New Yorkers. A total of 15 Hep B or C tests were conducted, 89 made contact to follow up, 3 were linked to care and 2 overdoses were reversed by providing Narcan!
