Breaking Down Hepatitis B Screening Barriers in the West African Community Living in the Bronx

Fatima Omarufilo, Check Hep B and Starfish Program Patient Navigator, alabaran@montefiore.org

Dr. Emmanuel Emeasoba, Montefiore Hospital, eemeasob@montefiore.org

  • Since 2017, the Starfish program has given 60 presentations at faith-based organizations in the Bronx.
  • After collecting contact numbers of participants after each presentation, the navigator was able to follow up with participants and schedule them for appointments
  • Many participants brought their families to the testing session, where they received Hep B education and handouts.
  • About 1 in 10 participants tested were Hep B surface antigen-positive (chronic infection)
  • Program does not routinely offer HIV testing however It will be considered in the future since African immigrants are often undiagnosed for a longer time than other racial groups.
