Closing the Gap: Rapid Testing for Syphilis, HIV & Hep C in Correctional Settings
Monday, June 9 | 12 – 1 PM
RSVP
Description:
Correctional settings present a critical opportunity for public health intervention, especially given the high prevalence and co-infection rates of syphilis, HIV, and Hep C among justice-involved populations. This webinar will explore the benefits of implementing rapid point-of-care (POC) testing in jails and other short-term facilities, including timely diagnosis, immediate linkage to care, and reduced disease transmission. Attendees will review the public health implications of missed testing opportunities and learn how POC testing supports both individual and community health. The session will also highlight practical strategies and available resources for launching rapid testing programs, as well as the importance of collaboration among correctional health care providers, facility staff, and community partners to ensure successful implementation and follow-up.
Objectives:
- Review the high prevalence and co-infection rates of syphilis, HIV and Hep C in short-term correctional/jail settings, along with the public health implications and the need for rapid POC testing
- Discuss the benefits of implementing syphilis, HIV and Hep C rapid testing, including timely diagnosis and treatment, and explore resources available for implementing rapid testing programs
- Recognize the critical role of collaboration among health care providers, correctional staff, and community organizations in supporting testing and treatment initiatives

Dr. Alysse G. Wurcel, Clinician Investigator, Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine
