Community Chair

James S. Park, MD,  Director of the Asian Liver Health Program at NYU Langone Medical Center. (james.park@nyumc.org) In this role, Dr. Park will build relationships with coalition members, serve on the advisory board, and represent the coalition at local, state, and national meetings.

Health Department Organizers

Nirah Johnson, LCSW, Director of Program Implementation & Capacity Building NYC Health Department, Viral Hepatitis Program (njohnso2@health.nyc.gov) serves as the lead organizer of the NYC Hep B Coalition and Hep C Task Force since 2007.

Daniel Calder MPH, Outreach and Community Education Coordinator,  NYC Health Department, Viral Hepatitis Program (dcalder@health.nyc.gov) manages the implementation of NYC Hep B Coalition and Hep C Task Force meetings and initiatives.  He has a background in health education and behavioral science and is a Certified Health Education Specialist.

Hep B Ad Board Members

Amy Shen Tang, MD, Charles B. Wang Community Health Center (CBWCHC) (astang@cbwchc.org) At CBWCHC, Dr. Tang oversees hepatitis B clinical care, research, community outreach to at-risk communities to reduce perinatal transmission and liver complications of hepatitis B.  Additionally, she serves as the Hep B Coalition Advocacy Chair, working  with local, regional, and national stakeholders and coalitions to advocate for hepatitis B awareness and support.

Christina Tsai, Clinic Director of the Brooklyn Chinese Family Health Center at Lutheran Healthcare (ctsai@lmcmc.com)

Edward WakeNYC Health Department (ewake@health.nyc.gov) is the Chief for Adult Immunization at the NYC Health Deparment, and coordinates activities for the NYC Adult Immunization Coalition. He is a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Public Health Advisor assigned to New York City.

Frank Winter, CMS (frank.winter@cms.hhs.gov) works with the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services in External Affairs. Frank works to improve health care access for all.

Henry Chang, Global Health Consultant (henry.amsterdam@gmail.com)  is a public health consultant with more than 25 years of experience in patient advocacy, program development, implementation and evaluation related to HIV/AIDS, and more recently, HBV and HCV. He also serves as Chair of Hep B Coalition’s Hep B Patients for a Cure Committee. Henry is one of the top 10 Twitter influencers on scientific, medical and patient advocacy topics related to viral hepatitis and serves as Twitter Ambassador for European Association for the Study of the Liver.

Julie Lazaroff, MPH, NYC Health Department  (jlazarof@health.nyc.gov)  is the Coordinator for the Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program at the NYC Health Department. She has worked since 2004 to prevent perinatal and horizontal transmission of hepatitis B from pregnant women living in New York City to their newborn, sexual and household contacts.

Kim Nichols, ScM, MPH (kimn@africanservices.org) is the Co-Executive Director of African Services Committee has been involved in both NYC and global AIDS -and more recently viral hepatitis – advocacy for the past 20 years and has served on many panels and committees to advance information about the health needs of African communities.

Maria Karlya, Charles B Wang Community Health Center (mkarlya@cbwchc.org) is the Communications Associate at the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center. She manages communications with patients, community members, partner organizations, supporters, alumni, government and the media. She has been a member of the NYC Hepatitis B Coalition since 2012.

Ponni Perumalswami, MD, Mount Sinai (ponni.perumalswami@mountsinai.org) is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Liver Diseases at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.  Her areas of clinical interest include cirrhosis, acute/chronic liver diseases and liver transplantation. Her research program focuses on community outreach for hepatitis B and C screening and linking patients to care. She is an investigator for many ongoing clinical trials evaluating the safety and efficacy of new antiviral treatments for chronic hepatitis B and C.

Sara Soonsik Kim, MPH Korean Community Services (skim@kcsny.org) serves as Interim Director for the Public Health and Research Program at Korean Community Services. She leads the Check Hep B Patient Navigation Program and other projects to meet the health needs of Korean immigrants. She also serves as a co-chair of the Asian Coalition under the American Diabetes Association, New York Chapter since 2015.

Simona C. Kwon, DPH, NYU CSAAH (simona.kwon@nyumc.org) is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Population Health and Medicine at the NYU School of Medicine. She directs the NIH National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities-funded, Center for the Study of Asian American Health, and is the co-PI on the CDC-funded REACH FAR initiative.

Vinh Pham, MD, Bellevue Hospital (vinh.pham@nyumc.org)  is Medical Director for the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program of NYULMC, a member of the Infection Prevention and Control Dept of NYULMC, and a provider in the Infectious Diseases Faculty Group Practice of NYULMC and Hospital for Joint Diseases. He is also a Clinical Instructor at Bellevue Hospital.
