World Hand Hygiene Day

May 5

Awareness Event

World Hand Hygiene Day

Hand hygiene is part of infection prevention and control measures. Practicing good hand hygiene is critical to achieving quality of care and patient safety across all levels of the health system.

The WHO calls on everyone to be inspired by the global movement to achieve universal health coverage (UHC), i.e. achieving better health and well-being for all people at all ages, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health care services and access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all.

Practicing good hand hygiene can prevent the spread of illnesses such as hepatitis A. It’s important to wash your hands with soap and warm water before and/or after using the bathroom, changing diapers, and before preparing or eating food. From 2009 to 2012, there was a steady decline in reported hepatitis A infections in NYC. However, there was an increase in cases in 2013 that were related to food handlers.
