In this online presentation, Dr. Calvin John Smiley will discuss the links between incarceration and reentry on the body since the body goes through various changes while incarcerated, which can impact the reentry process. Through ethnographic fieldwork with men and women returning back to the community, Dr. Smiley’s work argues that prison and reentry alter the body, which is then judged by various sets of markers that are: visible/invisible; physical/mental; tangible/abstract that create complex as well as contradictory needs to return safely to the community. Ultimately, policy changes to the criminal justice system could enhance overall quality of life, reduce stigma, and deter recidivism.
