Legal Protections Against Hepatitis-Based Discrimination in Healthcare Education
Thu, May 21, 2020 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM EDT
Up to 2.2 million Americans are living with chronic hepatitis B infection. Living with hepatitis B can mean living with stigma and facing discrimination. Discrimination can occur in personal and professional environments such as the workplace, academic institutions, and other public settings.
Please join us for a Hepatitis Awareness Month webinar on combating discriminatory practices against health care students living with hepatitis B. In 2011, two students living with hepatitis B were accepted to medical school, but upon discovery of their hepatitis B infection, the school rescinded their admission.
Panelists will discuss cases of discrimination against health care students with hepatitis B, preliminary research findings from an analysis of health professions school admissions policies in two jurisdictions, federal legal protections, and the process for filing complaints.
