Special Assistant, Bureau of Immunization

Job Description

The mission of the Bureau of Immunization (BOI) is to prevent the occurrence and transmission of diseases through immunization. The Bureau promotes the immunization of children and adults against numerous diseases such as: Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps and Rubella, Varicella, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Haemophilus Influenzae Type B, Polio, Influenza and Pneumococcal disease and the Human Papilloma virus (HPV).

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Develop and monitor progress in achieving BOI programmatic objectives and goals, Advise Assistant Commissioner of progress and barriers to achieving Bureau priorities as stated in the QPR, Division and Bureau level goal documents, as well as, those goals
    stated in the CDC Immunization grant, and external grants (pandemic influenza, bioterrorism grants, prevention and public health
    funds).
  • Conduct data analysis to identify gaps in coverage and areas of low immunization coverage using information provided by BOI units.
  • Prepare BOI progress reports, updates, and alert management and respective Unit Chiefs of under achievement.
  • Monitor grant opportunities and coordinate submission of proposals to address Bureau priorities.
  • Monitor the Bureau’s timeliness in submitting monthly and quarterly grant reports to CDC.
  • Develop and coordinate submission of appropriate research proposals to address identified gaps in immunization coverage in all demographic groups, with emphasis, on factors contributing to persistently low immunization coverage among adults, adolescents, and children for all routinely recommended vaccines including influenza.
  • Assist in the planning, development and implementation of BOI evaluation plan.
  • Maintain the Bureau’s webpages and ensure that content is kept up to date, Attend local, state and federal conferences, quarterly coalition meetings and other meetings relevance with BOI, and its partners.

Minimum Qual Requirements

For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:

  1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  2. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least a master’s degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in “2” above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in “1” and “2” above.

NOTE:

Probationary Period
Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.

Preferred Skills

Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills; Excellent computer skills in MS Word, MS Access, MS Excel, SPSS and/or SAS, SQL, and ArcGIS; Excellent research and analytical skills; Ability to originate ideas and develop objectives to accomplish special projects; Ability to travel
